In 1996 after gaining a distinction for my masters degree in computer graphics, I started my career in visual effects with Jim Hensons Creature Shop (London). Over 4 years at Hensons I developed a broad base of skills, from modelling, texturing and shading, character animation and lighting, to graphics programming, technical direction and R&D work. I also had the good fortune to learn a wide variety of techniques for seamlessly integrating visual effects with live action from my highly experience colleagues, as well as Henson's unique approach to character creation and virtual puppetry.
While traveling in New Zealand in 2002, I was offered a permanent position as Head of 3D, with Digital Post, a post-production house in Auckland. The skills I learned on my masters degree and at Hensons stood me in good stead at Digital Post, where I was responsible for the setup and running of all aspects of the 3D production process. This gave me the opportunity to experience CG supervision, strengthen my team leadership skills and also my independent, expedient problem solving skills in the time critical environment of television commercials.
After 2 years with Digital Post I decided to move on, to again be involved in long format projects as a senior generalist technical director, with an emphasis on lighting and rendering with MTOR/RenderMan Artist Tools. This allowed me to concentrate on my main strengths, combining my graphics knowledge, with MEL scripting to provide bespoke solutions and an efficient work flow for artists. I have shown myself to be comfortable in many areas of the effects pipeline, from modeling, texturing and shading, to character animation, to lighting, to pipeline development.
In 2007 I joined Intelligent Creatures Inc. in Toronto, Canada as 3D Supervisor to take on the exciting challenge of creating Rorschach's inkblot mask for the movie adaptation of a long time favorite graphic novel of mine, "Watchmen". At IC I have used my talents, technical skills and experience to lead teams of CG artists to successfully complete this and other complex, high-end film visual effects.
